At any point in time, you can always “Push pause.”

Stressed out?
Push pause.

Exhausted?
Push pause.

Confused?
Unclear?
Push pause.

Needing more boundaries and clarity?
Push pause.

Has an interaction gone farther than you intended?
A friendship no longer feeling reciprocal?
A desire or need not being met?
Push pause.

As a dance educator, ‘the pause button’ has been a favored tool in my teaching for the past decade and a half. I really enjoy getting people moving — whether that is in a contact dance between two or more people or a group of people traversing time and space together across a wooden dance floor.

“Pause!” I will call out, as I walk barefoot across a polished floor. Then, we will collectively catch our breath and check in with how we are feeling right in this very moment. Are we present and in tune with our partner(s) and surrounding(s)? Or, are we feeling bored, checked out, uncomfortable, etc?
